Why the Buccaneers Will Win the NFC South Again
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

So it’s been a minute since I wrote here. Between a new job and lack of news, I haven’t felt the need to write here. Plus, I have my YouTube channel (which you all should totally check out pretty please.). But with the draft settled and all teams basically set, it’s a good time to explain why the Buccaneers still have the NFC South throne. Most the reasons will be pretty self-explanatory, but I promise it will have some in-depth analysis.

This is probably the most obvious, but the Buccaneers have easily the best WR core. and also the best QB Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan is miles ahead of nearly every other NFL franchise, especially those in the NFC South. And that’s not including if Emeka Egbuka works out. The Falcons have an ok group of ball catchers, but nowhere near the Bucs ability. The Saints and Panthers… have wide receivers. I think. Like 90% sure.

The Bucs also have Baker Mayfield, who was arguably a top ten QB last year and likely would’ve been considered for MVP if he wasn’t playing like Brett Favre. I don’t know who the hell will start for the Saints, Bryce Young has yet to prove he’s a good QB, and Michael Penix is still a mystery.

This is an advantage that is probably not as obvious. Todd Bowles, for all the flaws that he has, is the best head coach in the division. Really, the whole coaching staff is probably better than every other team. Josh Grizzard is a wildcard, but I’m willing to be optimistic due to the success he has already had as a WR coach. The Falcons are probably the closest as Zac Robinson is pretty good, but I’m not sure about Jeff Ulbricht considering what happened to the Jets defense when it was just him without Robert Saleh. The Saints and Panthers are also unproven, especially the Saints with a bunch of first timers.

To look at other teams, most of them are either treading water or trending down. The Saints are absolutely trending down. I know Derek Carr’s retirement is being celebrated like Mardi Gras by most fans, but I’m not sure any QB on their roster makes them a better team.

Tyler Shough could be good, but he’s unproven while Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener have never won an NFL game. The Panthers I would say are treading water right now. Which, when you have one of the worst teams last year, isn’t great. They did make improvements in the draft and will get their defense back from injury, but I don’t know how much better they will be. The Falcons improved their pass rush on paper, but Michael Penix, despite showing promise, is an unproven commodity. Although I will give them that he will likely be better than Kirk Cousins. Whether or not they’re better is to be determined.

The Bucs, by all metrics, got better. They hopefully improved their pass rush with Haasan Reddick and drafting David Walker. I’m also hopeful the secondary is going to see improvement with both guys returning and an infusion in the draft. And hell, if the defense is dog water again, the Buccaneers can score with the passing and rushing attack. I’m not convinced any team in the division really can compete. I’m not just saying that because I’m biased, although of course that is sneaking in, but most NFL fans and pundits wouldn’t be scared of any of the South teams outside the Bucs. They either haven’t shown enough or are trending straight down.
