Ian Rapoport said on NFL Now that he knows why the Chicago Bears haven't traded Justin Fields yet and the answer is Caleb Williams. Rapoport said to Andrew Siciliano that this isn't a 'Justin Fields discussion' anymore, it's a 'Caleb Williams and the No. 1 pick discussion'.
He also states the Bears and GM Ryan Poles are committed to fully evaluating every quarterback they have to choose from. There isn't a rush to a decision this big and franchise-altering.
Rapoport also said that he still believes the Bears will take a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick. But before the NFL draft begins on April 27, the plan should be due diligence.
As more time passes with the NFL free agency's window opening, the less likely it is for the Chicago Bears to find a trade partner for Justin Fields. But as Rapoport points out, quarterbacks can get traded even on draft day like Josh Rosen did and that could happen in 2024.
Ryan Poles hasn't committed to anything serious other than evaluating the talent he has on the roster. That's how he's operated since becoming the General Manager of the Chicago Bears.
Whether or not a trade happens sooner rather than later, we know Poles put a great deal of thought into the decision. If Justin Fields is still in Chicago when the 2024 season begins, it could very well be as a backup to a rising star.
