Why the Offensive Rookie of the Month award is just the beginning for C.J. Stroud

Selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has taken the league by storm.

Through his first three games in the NFL, Stroud has thrown for 906 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. In Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts, Stroud threw for 384 yards, the second most in Texans history by a rookie and second most for someone under 21 years old since the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) merged back in 1970.

Stroud's 906 yards through a quarterback's first three games are third most, behind only Cam Newton (1,012) and Justin Herbert (931).

His 121 and counting pass attempts to begin a career without throwing an interception are the most in NFL history.

For his stellar play, Stroud was recently awarded Offensive Rookie of the Month.

As exceptional as his play has been so far this season, this won't be the last award Stroud wins this year.

Here's why.

1.  Passing yards leader in 2023?

As mentioned, through Stroud's first three career games, he has thrown for 906 yards, fifth most in the NFL this season. That is likely to stay constant as the 2020, 2021, and 2022 versions of the Texans allowed the sixth-most points each year in the NFL.

Stroud will find himself on a team constantly playing from behind, just like Kirk Cousins does in Minnesota. He will have no choice but to continuously throw the ball. For reference, in 2022, the Texans ran the ball the third least in the NFL. Through three weeks into the 2023 NFL season, the Texans have rushed for 210 yards, fifth worst in the league.

So, what might this mean for Stroud?

It means high production.

Stroud is fifth in passing yards this season and can fight to become the NFL's passing yards leader in 2023.

2. OROY

So far, no one has played better as a rookie than Stroud, quarterback or not. In fact, no rookie quarterback has thrown for as many yards or tossed as many touchdowns this year as the former Ohio State quarterback has.

Two of Stroud's receivers, Nico Collins and Tank Dell, already have 250 receiving yards apiece on the season.

The quarterback and the two receivers will benefit from a lackluster defense, as they will continue to put up high-volume numbers in passing yards.

If Stroud's production rivals that of his first three weeks, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award is for his taking.
