The Philadelphia Eagles are close to contention, but one major piece is missing: an elite pass rusher who can consistently disrupt games. Following an offseason without a true difference-maker on the edge, concerns around the defense continue to grow. The unit still has talent, but it lacks a player who can take over games in big moments.
Myles Garrett changes that instantly. One of the most dominant defenders in the NFL, Garrett has the ability to impact every snap and completely shift an offense’s game plan. The Cleveland Browns recently adjusted the language in his contract, making a trade more realistic than ever.
The Browns recently modified the language in Garrett’s contract, pushing back the date for his bonuses to be paid a week before the start of each season. The contract had previously called for the bonuses to be exercised by the 15th day of the new league year.
Garrett also had around $8 million of his base salary moved to roster bonuses for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. The Browns still reportedly remain uninterested in moving the star, but this adjustment opens the possibility once again.
The Eagles have a young and solid EDGE rusher core, but they remain without that solidified game-changing level pass rusher. Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith Jr. headline the group, but they have not proven to be the elite EDGE that is needed.
Philadelphia has reportedly been interested in plenty of high-profile edge rushers who have become available. They made pushes for Micah Parsons and Maxx Crosby and still have the option of trading for Jonathan Greenard.
A Garrett trade would not come cheap for Howie Roseman. The main piece involved would be star receiver AJ Brown; a trade for Garrett doesn’t happen if Brown remains on the roster. That could be trading the receiver to the Browns directly or moving him in a separate deal and using the acquired picks to trade for Garrett.
If the Browns have interest in Brown, the Eagles could part with up to two first-round picks on top of the WR to try and acquire Garrett. If they don’t, the total package could reach three first-rounders for the elite edge rusher.
The Eagles are in a position to compete, but the roster still lacks a dominant edge presence. Championship windows in the NFL can close quickly, making aggressive moves necessary. Passing on a player like Garrett could mean missing a rare opportunity to elevate the defense.
A trade would not come cheap, but the impact would be immediate and significant. Adding Garrett would transform the pass rush and raise the ceiling of the entire unit. The Eagles should trade for Garrett while the opportunity still exists.
