Will Mike Tomlin Leave Steelers For Giants?

Talk of Mike Tomlin leaving Pittsburgh has surfaced again after the New York Giants fired Brian Daboll on Monday, and it has sparked some interest around the league because Tomlin rarely gets tied to other coaching jobs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach has been one of the NFL’s most consistent leaders for nearly two decades, and whenever his name appears in rumor cycles, fans want to know if there is anything real behind it. With the Giants seeking a new head coach and the Steelers battling another up-and-down season, the timing has only sparked the conversation.

Tomlin was named head coach of the Steelers in 2007 at the age of 35, and the team was 10-6 in his first season as a head coach. Now, at the age of 53 and in his 19th season, Tomlin has yet to see his team finish with a losing record.

Tomlin’s Long Run In Pittsburgh Still Stands Out

Tomlin is the longest tenured head coach in the NFL, one season ahead of John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens. His résumé is one that most franchises could only hope for. He has 188 regular-season wins, 12 playoff trips and a Super Bowl title. His run of never having a losing season remains one of the most impressive coaching streaks in modern football.

That consistency has kept the Steelers steady through quarterback changes, front office shifts and roster transitions. Even with the ups and downs of the past few seasons, Pittsburgh has stayed competitive under Tomlin while many teams around them have cycled through coaches.

Rodgers Has Struggled To Lift The Offense

The Steelers hoped Aaron Rodgers would bring immediate stability this season. While Pittsburgh sits in first place in the AFC North at 5-4, the Steelers are 29th in total yards with 280.7 per game and 23rd in passing with 195.0 yards per game. The run game has struggled with just 85.7 yards per game (30th).

Rodgers has thrown a touchdown in every game this season, but over the last three has just four total touchdowns and two interceptions. The Steelers have dropped two of those three games.

Giants Have A Young Core That Will Attract Coaches

The Giants are starting fresh with a young trio that already looks promising. Jaxson Dart has shown growth at quarterback, Cam Skattebo brings energy and physicality to the backfield, and Malik Nabers has quickly become one of the most exciting young receivers in the league. On the downside, Nabers and Skattebo are both out with season-ending injuries, and Dart has been in and out of the concussion protocol in his rookie season.

That kind of foundation makes New York a more appealing job than it may have seemed a year ago. After moving on from Daboll, the Giants appear ready to build around youth and stability, which naturally leads fans to dream about a veteran coach guiding the next phase.

Why Tomlin Still Appears Likely to Stay in Pittsburgh

Even with the noise, Tomlin remains under contract through 2027 and is still viewed as the face of the Steelers. As of September 2025, Sportico listed Tomlin as the fourth-highest-paid head coach in the NFL behind Andy Reid, Sean Payton and John Harbaugh

The Giants’ job is interesting and the Steelers have real problems to solve, especially with Rodgers only a short-term solution at quarterback at age 41. But Tomlin has built a career on fighting through tough seasons without jumping ship.

Unless something changes dramatically, the most realistic outcome is that he stays in Pittsburgh and continues leading the next chapter of the organization he has led for almost 20 years.

What's Next for Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh hosts AFC North rival Cincinnati in Week 11 on Sunday, followed by a road game Nov. 23 against the Chicago Bears. The Steelers will then finish out November with a home game against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Every game is critical for Pittsburgh down the stretch as the team tries to hold off the hard charging Ravens (4-5), who have won three straight to pull within one game of the Steelers for the AFC North lead. Pittsburgh will face its longtime rival twice in the final five weeks of the regular season.
