The only thing more difficult than being a Dolphins fan this time of year is staying healthy as a member of the Miami secondary. It’s clear that the Dolphins were attempting to create a new look in the secondary this season; unfortunately, it seems like they’re having to revamp the position group on a weekly basis. For the second time in as many weeks, the Dolphins have lost a cornerback for the season with a training camp injury.
The first camp casualty was Artie Burns, recently signed on a one-year deal after spending time with the Seattle Seahawks. Burns was being looked to as a source of veteran leadership for Miami, but he will have to provide said leadership from the sidelines as he suffered a torn ACL on the first day of training camp.
To replace Burns, Miami signed Jack Jones and Mike Hilton, a player with nine seasons under his belt who has spent his entire career in the AFC North. Playing for Pittsburgh from 2016-2020, then Cincinnati from 2021-2024. Ideally, he can bring the same veteran leadership as well as some grittiness that the Dolphins have been accused of lacking.
Then, on Saturday, fan favorite Kader Kohou went down while covering Tyreek Hill in a 1 on 1 drill. This morning, it was announced that what many feared had come to pass as Kohou will miss the 2025 season. Kohou is an undrafted player out of Texas A&M-Commerce who has worked his way up to being the number 1 cornerback heading into 2025. As such, he had earned the admiration of many Miami faithful, and so this was a devastating blow, as can be seen by the reaction on X.
As Adam Schefter pointed out on X, the entire starting secondary from last season will not suit up for the Dolphins this season. Jalen Ramsey was traded, Kendall Fuller was released, Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer left in free agency, and now Kader Kohou will miss the season due to injury.
Not a great start for a unit that was projected to be in the bottom half of the league coming into the season. Now the Dolphins find themselves in an undesirable position, forced to bring in even more talent from free agency just weeks before the regular season is set to kick off.
I believe the Dolphins should be aggressive to prepare against any more secondary injuries.
Josina Anderson reported Rasul Douglas has received at least one formal offer from the Dolphins, but they should reach back out to him and meet him where he is to seal the deal.
They should also be more active in pursuing Asante Samuel Jr., despite Samuel Jr.’s father, Asante Samuel, disparaging the Dolphins’ front office; it has been reported that he would still be open to signing with the team. If they can make the contracts work for both players, they should do it. The team is flirting with disaster if they do not attempt to make these types of signings.
