The Kansas City Chiefs' hopes are vanquished. They fell to 6-8 and were eliminated from playoff contention with a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
If that wasn't bad enough, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes had to be helped off the field with an injury. The team later confirmed that Mahomes suffered a torn ACL.
Even so, all Mahomes cares about is how things went down this season.
"Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever," the former MVP wrote on X.
Mahomes played the best football of his career at times this season. He also had the worst game of his career, at least by the numbers.
The Chiefs have plenty of work to do in the offseason to do right by him and surround him with the supporting cast he deserves.
As of now, however, this team has more questions than answers. From Travis Kelce's potential retirement to whether they'll lose defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and/or offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to a head-coaching position, the picture is quite blurry in Missouri.
But even if that's the case, Mahomes has already proven to be one of the greatest and most talented quarterbacks of all time, and it's never wise to bet against those types of guys. He'll be back.
