The Cincinnati Bengals made headlines last week for acquiring quarterback Joe Flacco in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Many proclaimed the Browns as the winners for getting a surplus of NFL Draft capital in exchange for the QB they just benched.
Mike Tomlin did not fall in that demographic. The head coach of Pittsburgh Steelers, who's about to face Cincinnati this week on "Thursday Night Football," had a strong take on the deal.
"You know, to be honest, it was shocking to me," Tomlin told reporters Monday. "[Cleveland general manager] Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me or us, because it doesn't make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening day starter to a division opponent that's hurting in that area, but that's just my personal feelings."
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor would agree with those personal feelings.
Taylor supported the move to expeditiously bring in Flacco and start him this past week. It also gives him and the team some film to go off when preparing to face Pittsburgh on short rest.
Tomlin's shock at the Browns going along with this is another coach's joy.
"I was happy," Taylor said smiling to reporters during his Monday presser. "I was happy. That's my only comment."
Taylor has received what no other Bengals coach has ever before. All three midseason trades in franchise history have been with him running atop the coaching staff. 10 years ago the idea of Cincinnati trading a real draft pick for a real player in the beginning of October would be a fantasy. That player being a starting QB would make it even more imaginary.
An urgent move for a coach who urgently needs wins. Taylor and Flacco couldn't pick up their first victory together at Lambeau Field, but they'll have another chance against Tomlin on Thursday night.
