Aleksei Medvedev is a 6’3″ left-catching goaltender from St. Petersburg, Russia. He played for the London Knights during the 2024-25 season and was an integral part of the team’s success, leading them to clinch the division, conference, and OHL regular season championships. Medvedev was awarded the Dave Pinkney Trophy alongside teammate Austin Elliott, an award given to the goaltenders of the team with the fewest goals against in the OHL regular season.

Diving Deeper

Medvedev spent the 2024-25 season as the second part of the London Knights’ goaltending tandem. He appeared in 34 games, holding a 2.79 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. He did not see any games during the postseason, but that was due to the team relying on Elliott’s experience and consistency.

Hockey IQ

Medvedev plays a composed, consistent game. He is able to make big saves when they matter and has been making above-average saves for a rookie goaltender in the league. He moves from post to post with ease and confidence, always ready to read the play in front of him. He has proven to be strong in his position and has phenomenal stick-handling abilities in the trapezoid.

Smart, athletic goalie that uses his skating and explosiveness as a strength. Not small, but makes himself larger with his positioning.

Room for Improvement

Medvedev doesn’t have very much to improve on aside from his size and strength, which can be said about most rookies and prospects. His ability to move post-to-post is great, but he could work on his five-hole saves. It isn’t a make-or-break part of his game, but he could work on avoiding the opportunity for a poke-check from the opponent.

Final Thoughts

Goaltenders take so long to develop that it can be hard to really predict where they’ll end up in the future. If Medvedev is able to bulk up and stay consistent in his game, he could certainly be a reliable NHL-caliber goaltender a few years down the road. With Elliott aging out of the London Knights system, Medvedev will have a chance to really improve on his game and show his consistency, which will help him down the road.
