Diving Deeper

Throughout the 2024-25 season, Trethewey played the majority of his games with the U.S. National U18 Team, where he held 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) over 63 games. He also dressed for 24 games for the United States National Development Team Program, where he finished with two goals and seven points. Trethewey also appeared in seven games for the U18 USA World Junior Championship team, holding just one point over seven appearances.

Hockey IQ

Trethewey is a player capable of physicality and solid puck-handling skills. He has a high motor and locks down threats to the puck, while stopping rushes and battling along the boards. He can skillfully create space for the puck in the corner of the net while managing the puck. Trethewey is historically tough to play against in the defensive zone; he uses his size to win puck battles and maintain control of the puck.

He’s a physically capable right-shot defenceman who’s used in all situations for the USNTDP. Trethewey can shoot the puck and has the ability to beat goalies clean from distance. His defensive detail ranges at times. He’s involved in the play, but struggles to take the correct “route” to contain his check at times. Trethewey projects as a two-way defenceman.

Areas to Improve

Trethewey has some room to improve with his overall mobility and lateral quickness. Both of those things can come to a strong defenseman with time and good coaching. His backward acceleration is another potential area for improvement, but it does not affect his overall trajectory too much.

Final Thoughts

Trethewey has the opportunity to become a solid top-four defenseman with his four-way mobility through the close gaps, smooth transitions, and play navigation. He has strong offensive consistency, which plays a large role in his consistency.
