It’s been a whirlwind 48 hours for the Panthers. After the trade news broke on Sunday of Brady Tkachuk joining his brother down in South Florida, the Cats held his introductory press conference on Tuesday. Unsurprisingly, the press conference opened with Bill Zito thanking Mackie Samoskevich for his time in Sunrise, while Brady thanked the Ottawa Senators and their fans for the eight years he spent in their organization. When asked about finding out he’d been traded, Brady talked about how he found out during family activities on Father’s Day. There was plenty that was said that wasn’t surprising, including bits about the team that have been echoed across all the new players that have come into the locker room. Zito once again emphasized the team’s goal to strive for excellence and winning. And Brady talked about his excitement to start a new chapter of his hockey career.
Zito revealed a bit of what he said to Brady, “In this instance, when we talked on the phone, I said it’s like a jigsaw puzzle. You’re the piece that fits into the puzzle, but at the same time it’s the perfect puzzle to fit around that piece.” It’s not the first time he’s used the puzzle metaphor, but it still holds true in how he constructs his rosters. When answering a question later in the press conference, Brady echoed the puzzle metaphor, saying, “Everything is done by committee, everyone is a part of the puzzle.” Like when the Cats acquired Seth Jones, Bill had something similar to say about Brady, “When a player of Brady’s stature, ability, and, most importantly, character becomes available, you do what you can to try and acquire players like that and fit them into the group.” When Jones came into the mix, Zito had something along the lines of “When a player like that becomes available, you go get them.” With a second Tkachuk into the mix, it does make Florida’s forward depth even more formidable than it already was. Eight of their top nine forwards were Olympians in Milan, and the only one who wasn’t (Carter Verhaeghe) is the Cats’ leading playoff goal scorer. While there’s been speculation from fans online already about where Brady fits into the lineup, the insinuation from Zito was that he could slot in on Barkov’s line.
When asked by the media about how he seems to consistently make big moves year after year, Zito replied, “Because we want to win. That’s our job, that’s our mission, and winning is paramount. And the manner in which we’ve been empowered to do it is to pursue excellence.” It’s not a new saying out of Zito’s mouth; he’s spoken repeatedly about how the Violas allow the team to do what’s necessary to provide the best for their players, including spending to the cap or the new practice facility that was built. Brady talked about the closeness of the locker room, something every new player has spoken about, noting how the team hangs out on and off the ice. He said, “It’s a special group…I’m really looking forward to getting to know those guys better.” Brady also said, “The sole focus here is about excellence and they’ve shown over the last few years…the goal is the Stanley Cup.” Tkachuk also spoke about the team being selfless and more concerned with the team goal than individual accomplishments. Not a new thing for fans to hear, as it’s been echoed across all the players the last several years.
One thing that felt rather clear is that the experience at the Olympics had an impact on the parties involved. Bill spoke about getting to work with Brady in Milan and how the Tkachuks’ room was a hangout spot for the team after games. He seemed genuinely excited that their room was the place to be. Brady talked about getting to see his brother in a new light as they shared a locker room both at 4 Nations and at the Olympics. He talked about seeing his brother’s leadership in action, how Matthew holds everyone to a standard, and the respect he gets in the locker room. Tkachuk also spoke on how the brothers didn’t imagine that getting to play together in the NHL would be a possibility, but that they loved playing together in Milan. Zito’s been in and around Team USA the last couple of years, so it’s not surprising that there would be some type of connection there, along with Brady being around the Cats while they celebrated their first two Stanley Cups. Both Tkachuks have been open about wanting to play with each other, Matthew said as much as far back as 2023. While 4 Nations was their first chance to play together on Team USA, the Olympics is where they won together. There’s now a good shot that they’ll get to do more winning down in South Florida.
