Despite a loss on Monday night, Connor Ingram is now the guy in Edmonton. The netminder has been a total success story this season, and versus the Colorado Avalanche, he offered up even more evidence that the choice about who will start in goal for the Oilers in the playoffs is a no-brainer.
It’s Ingram. He’s got the net, and it’s his crease to lose.
If not for Ingram, the Oilers don’t get a point and go to a shootout against the Presidents’ Trophy winners. He was spectacular, and while he was frustrated with himself for not stopping at least one of the shooters in the shootout, there wasn’t much more the Oilers could have asked of their starter.
“Pretty much since his time here he’s given us a lot of quality starts… The last week or two I think he’s even elevated his game,” said head coach Kris Knoblauch.
“I think he’s just really coming into his own here,” said defenseman Mattias Ekholm. “You can see it out there—he’s got more swagger. I’m really liking his game. I think he’s been our best player here for the last little bit. It sucks that we couldn’t pull out a win for him, but I’ve got nothing but praise for the way he’s been playing lately.”
It’s the kind of play that has Knoblauch ready to put all his chips in. When asked about starting Tristan Jarry for the final game of the season on Thursday, Knoblauch was noncommittal. That may be what happens, but the sense is that the coach is comfortable riding Ingram until the wheels come off. Ingram is fine with that, noting that he likes playing more and finds it easier to perform better when he’s getting the looks.
“I’ve played 50 in this league before; it’s nothing new to me,” he noted.
The Oilers are hoping that he’s up for the challenge. He’s their guy, and they’ll need him to be as good as he’s been the last few weeks when the playoffs begin this weekend.
