On Thursday, veteran defenseman Marco Scandella announced his retirement following 14 NHL seasons. The 35-year-old spent the bulk of his career patrolling the blue line for the Minnesota Wild.

“From my first NHL game to my last, the game of hockey has given me more than I could have ever imagined,” Scandella said on Instagram. “I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to have worn the jerseys of the Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and St. Louis Blues.”

Scandella proved to be a dependable blue liner throughout his seven seasons in Minnesota. His career-best season came with the Wild in 2014-15, when he notched 11 goals and 12 assists in 64 regular season games.

During the summer of 2017, the Wild sent Scandella, Jason Pominville and a 2018 fourth-round draft pick to Buffalo Sabres for Tyler Ennis, Marcus Foligno and a 2018 third-round pick.

In his first season in Buffalo, Scandella further cemented his reputation as a minute-eating defenseman by logging a career-high 23:19 average time on ice. That season, he dressed for all 82 regular season games.

The 6-foot-3 left-hander briefly represented his hometown Montreal Canadiens for 20 games during the 2019-20 season, where he was dealt twice before the trade deadline.

Scandella wrapped up his career with a five-year spell with the St. Louis Blues. His final season came in 2023-24, where he registered two goals and six assists for the Blues in 65 regular season games. He did not play in the 2024-25 season.

His 1,066 combined regular season and playoff blocked shots were evidence of his commitment and fearless style of play.

Scandella skates off into retirement with 170 points (51 goals, 119 assists) in 784 regular season games, as well as six goals and three assists in 56 career postseason games.
