Adam Boqvist Signs In Switzerland

With the season well underway and no NHL opportunity materializing, defenseman Adam Boqvist has decided to head overseas.  Geneve-Servette in Switzerland announced that they’ve inked the blueliner to a two-year contract.

The 26-year-old was the eighth overall pick by Chicago back in 2018 with the hopes that he could become a quality offensive blueliner in the pros.  However, while he showed flashes of upside in that regard, he was inconsistent while his defensive game didn’t develop enough to give him a high enough floor to keep him in the lineup.

As a result, Boqvist had bounced around a bit in recent years.  He wound up spending three years in Columbus after being part of the Seth Jones trade back in 2021 but was bought out of the final season of his contract in 2024, sending him to unrestricted free agency for the first time.

Boqvist signed a league-minimum contract soon after with Florida but found himself on waivers a few months later, joining the Islanders.  He did well enough the rest of the way to earn a small raise for last season but played rather sparingly, notching just four assists in 28 games.  With arbitration eligibility on the horizon, the team elected to non-tender Boqvist back in June, putting him back on the open market.

Boqvist departs the NHL with 272 games under his belt over parts of seven seasons across four organizations.  In those outings, he had 27 goals and 76 assists along with 250 blocked shots while averaging 16:33 of playing time per night.  If he can secure a more prominent role in Switzerland’s top level, it’s certainly possible that Boqvist could get himself back on the NHL radar in the future.
