The Winnipeg Jets have reached an agreement on a contract extension with captain Adam Lowry, per Murat Ates of The Athletic.
Lowry’s new five-year contract is worth $5 million annually and $25 million total. At the time of writing, there are no reported trade clauses or salary structure details available.
The deal was announced at the Winnipeg Jets’ Gala that they’ve extended Lowry to the contract.
Lowry, 32, was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round (67th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a five-year contract extension back in 2021 with an AAV of $3.25 million per season. Lowry’s new contract is set to begin in the 2026-27 season.
The Jets’ captain since 2023 has appeared regularly for the team in every season except the 2015-16 season where he suited up in four AHL contests for the Manitoba Moose. He previously played 73 for the St. John’s IceCaps before the team relocated back to Manitoba.
The St. Louis, Missouri-born center has been a fixture in the Jets’ middle six, primarily suiting up on the third line.
He recovered from offseason hip surgery and has been off to a hot start in 2025-26, posting three points (1G, 2A) in seven games played. Since the 2022-23 season, Lowry has posted 30 or more points. His career high in goals (16) came in 2024-25, while his career high in assists (23) happened twice. Lowry’s reached the 82-game mark twice in his career, first in 2016-17, and again in 2022-23. He’s come close with 80 games in his rookie campaign in 2014-15 and 81 in the 2023-24 season.
It goes without saying that Lowry’s not known for racking up points, it’s what he does outside of scoring that makes him incredibly valuable to the Jets.
Locking up a strong penalty killer and smart two-way centre is a strategic move that only guarantee’s a commitment to competitiveness in Winnipeg. Lowry’s got a level of physicality to his game that he doesn’t have to prove his toughness and he will defend teammates with the occasional fight.
This allows Lowry and the Jets’ top penalty killing unit be one of the top units in the league, seemingly dominating other teams and shutting down some of the best power plays in the entire NHL.
As big as the physical side of the game is, Lowry’s also dominant at the face off for, winning a majority of his draws and being incredibly reliable to win draws in the defensive zone. Last season, Lowry won 52% of all his draws, a statistic that allowed head coach Scott Arniel trust him against some of the best centre’s in the league.
Off the ice, Lowry’s highly involved in the Winnipeg community. While most of it isn’t seen on camera, when it does get filmed, it amplifies the character that Lowry has and the leadership he provides.
Having Lowry retire a Winnipeg Jet became a clear priority after the Jets re-signed Kyle Connor to an eight-year contract, making Connor a longtime Winnipeg Jet himself. Lowry will be 38 years old when the contract expires at the end of the 2030-31 season.
