The Providence Bruins entered today’s matinee game looking for a weekend series sweep over Cleveland. The Bruins won last night 2-1 over the Monsters. The game needed overtime to decide a winner.

Cleveland got the scoring started in the opening period, just under eight minutes in. Will Butcher scored his first of the season. The period was a tough one for the Bruins as they were outshot 13-3.
The Bruins evened the score as Jake Schmaltz scored his first of the year to make it a 1-1 game. Just over halfway through regulation the Monsters took the lead again as Brendan Gaunce scored his third of the year. Once again for the fifth straight period Cleveland outshot Providence 13-6.
Just under nine minutes left in the period, Providence would knot the game up at two as John Farinacci scored his third goal of the season and second of the weekend. Neither team would score forcing the game to overtime. Providence finally outshot the Monsters in a period outshooting them 10-4.
It took just 49 seconds for the Matthew Poitras to score the game-winner in the second shot of the period. It was Poitras’ first of the season on a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing sequence.

Simon Zajicek got the start for Providence stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced keeping the Bruins in the game. Zach Sawchenko got the start for Cleveland stopping 18 of the 21 shots he faced in the loss. Farinacci was the first star of the game with Schmaltz being named the second star and Butcher came in as the third star.
Providence is back at it Wednesday night at home against the Hartford Wolf Pack with puck drop at 7:05 PM EST. Cleveland returns to the ice next Saturday on the road against the Chicago Wolves with puck drop at 8:00 PM EST.
