After Finland's game against Sweden today, elite player Aleksander Barkov sent a message to the Montreal Canadiens regarding Patrik Laine.
Clearly, Barkov is aware of Laine's recent struggles in Montreal and the punishments imposed by Martin St-Louis, including his demotion to the fourth line before the Four Nations showdown break. Because of this, he shared a message during a press conference.
We know that Barkov is probably Laine's best friend in the hockey world, and he clearly had his back today. He made a great public gesture to give his friend Laine a well-deserved pat on the back (especially after a strong performance).
Here's what Barkov had to say:
'I think in both games, the one against the USA and especially today, he did everything.I didn't even expect that.
He was really on top of his game.
He battled hard.
He made big plays.
He was outstanding.
That's the best Patrik Laine we can have.'
- Aleksander Barkov, acknowledging the recent criticism from Montreal toward Laine.
According to Barkov, what we saw from Laine today is exactly what Martin St-Louis should aim for and demand.
Today against Sweden, Laine finished the game with two points (two assists), a +1 rating, one shot on goal, three hits, and just over 15 minutes of ice time.
He was also named the second star of the game.
That's an excellent way for Laine to respond after being demoted to his team's third line.
