Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history to score 900 career goals on Wednesday night, adding another accolade to his long resume.

The milestone, however, was followed by a strange moment involving St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington.

Ovechkin scored a backhand rebound at two minutes, 39 seconds of the second period to extend the Capitals’ lead to 2–0. The goal prompted a full team celebration and a standing ovation from the home crowd at Capital One Arena.

As the puck came to rest in the crease, Binnington quickly picked it up and tucked it into the waistband of his pants before skating away.

Despite Binnington’s attempt to keep the puck, officials ensured it was recovered and returned to Ovechkin. After the game, Ovechkin was asked about Binnington's actions.

“Yeah. Yeah. I just saw that,” Ovechkin said. “I’m not going to comment on it.”

The 40-year-old Capitals captain did elaborate on the milestone itself.

“Every milestone is a special moment,” Ovechkin said. “But tonight is obviously a special one, to get to be the first player ever to do that. So, yeah, it’s a special moment. Trust me, I enjoy it too.”

The 900-goal mark is the latest in a series of milestones for Ovechkin, who broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record in April with No. 895. He finished the 2024-25 season with 897 goals.

Ovechkin now has three goals in 13 games this season to go with five assists for eight total points, and he sits 10 points behind Joe Sakic for 10th on the NHL’s all-time points list.

The Capitals beat the Blues 6–1 and improved to 7-5-1 on the season. They visit the Pittsburgh Penguins (8-4-2) on Thursday night.
