It’s official. The Vegas Golden Knights will be without one of their cornerstones for the entire 2025-26 season. The team announced that veteran defenseman and future Hall of Famer Alex Pietrangelo has been shut down for the season, placing him on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) as they submitted their opening night roster.

Pietrangelo’s Lingering Injury and a Glimmer of Hope

The news puts a definitive, albeit perhaps temporary, cap on a period of uncertainty surrounding the 35-year-old’s career. Back in the off-season, Alex Pietrangelo announced he was stepping away from the game to address a nagging, long-term hip injury. At the time, Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon cast serious doubt on whether the defensive stalwart would ever lace up his skates again professionally.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged in September. Alex Pietrangelo spoke to the Vegas media, revealing that his rehab was progressing better than expected and he wasn’t shutting the door on a potential return this season. “Nothing’s really concrete,” he said at the time. “I’m going to take it day by day and go through my process and see where it goes.”

That process has now led to a season on the sidelines. While his long-term future remains a question mark, his short-term status is clear: he won’t be on the ice.

What This Means for the Golden Knights’ Cap Situation

Hockey is a business as much as it is a sport, and this move has significant financial implications for the Vegas team. By declaring Alex Pietrangelo out for the entire campaign, the Golden Knights are eligible for full relief on his substantial $8.8 million salary cap hit.

This gives the front office a massive amount of flexibility to navigate the season. Under the new LTIR rules, had the team wanted to keep the door open for a potential playoff return, they would have only received $3.8 million in relief. This all-or-nothing decision signals the severity of the situation but unlocks crucial cap space for a team that always looks to be a contender.

The Massive Hole Left on the Blue Line

You don’t just replace a player like Alex Pietrangelo. His absence leaves a gaping hole on the Vegas blue line and in the locker room. The King City, Ontario native, drafted fourth overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2008, has been a model of consistency and excellence throughout his career.

In 1,087 career games with the Blues and Golden Knights, he has amassed 148 goals and 637 points. But his value goes far beyond the scoresheet. He’s a two-time Stanley Cup champion, hoisting the coveted trophy in 2019 with St. Louis and again in 2023 with Vegas. He was a critical piece of that championship puzzle for the Golden Knights, a leader who logged heavy, important minutes against the opposition’s best.

On the international stage, Alex Pietrangelo also reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 Sochi Games.

His leadership, defensive prowess, and offensive contributions will be sorely missed as the Golden Knights embark on their season, which kicks off Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings. For now, the team and its fans can only hope that this season of rest and recovery will allow one of the game’s great defensemen a chance to write another chapter in his storied career.
