After several years of trying, the Anaheim Ducks traded goalie John Gibson today to the Detroit Red Wings.

John Gibson, who most recently was believed to have blocked a trade to the Edmonton Oilers over concerns of splitting a net with Stuart Skinner, will join the Red Wings as they look to make the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade.

There's debate about how much Edmonton looked at Ducks' John Gibson at the deadline; Gibson wasn't crazy about idea of sharing a crease with Stuart Skinner

- Elliotte Friedman

Per Friedman, the return will be goaltender Petr Mrazek, who was acquired by the Red Wings at the 2022 NHL draft in exchange for a pick swap with the Maple Leafs. The Red Wings will equally add two draft picks.

Gibson, who's entering the seventh year of an eight-year $51.2 million deal, which carries an annual average value of $6.4 million, has had a stellar career, despite a few down years.

The Pittsburgh native has a career save percentage of .912, and will certainly be a big upgrade for the Red Wings.

With an NHL award under his belt, having had the league's lowest goals allowed against, winning the William M. Jennings trophy in 2015-16, there is a clear history of high-end play.

Despite having over 500 games played, there is more left in the tank for Gibson. Whether or not it is enough to get the Red Wings into the playoffs, however, is unknown.
