The 2024-25 season is just around the corner for ASU Athletics as 26 intercollegiate varsity sports are either starting in the fall or preparing for the spring this school year.

While the operations are getting back into the groove of things, the attendances of the past 2023-24 season were released and the results showed that 863,683 people watched the Sun Devils compete in a variety of different sports.

2023-24 Season Attendance Totals (Average attendance per event)

  1. Football: 8 events = 393,756 (49,220)
  2. Men’s Basketball: 15 events = 124,752 (8,317)
  3. Hockey: 26 events = 124,503 (4,789)
  4. Baseball: 33 events = 95,094 (2,882)
  5. Softball: 33 events = 36,273(1,099)
  6. Volleyball: 10 events = 31,458 (3,146)
  7. Women’s Basketball: 16 events = 30,949 (1,934)
  8. Gymnastics: 5 events = 10,431 (2,086)
  9. Soccer: 10 events = 7,013 (701)
  10. Wrestling: 4 events = 6,107 (1,527)
  11. Women’s Lacrosse: 9 events = 3,347 (372)

Football overwhelmingly led the pack of sports with close to 400,000 people attending games throughout the year when they finished 3-9 last season, proving the fans stick with the team no matter the situation. The season-opening 24-21 win over Southern Utah held 11,680 students who watched inside Mountain America Stadium, making it the seventh-most amount of students at a single football game since 2011.

Men’s basketball just edged hockey by 249 more spectators in total even though the capacity of Mullett Arena (5,000) for hockey is significantly smaller than basketball’s Desert Financial Arena (14,198). With the NHL’s now-defunct Arizona Coyotes sharing “The Mullett,” ASU Hockey still finished top 10 in the country in attendance percentage and No. 5 in total attendance last year, according to Arizona State.

Baseball came in fourth with a total of 95,094 and as for volleyball, they drew in an impressive average attendance of 3,146 through just 10 matches after going 28-7.

Since ASU is leaving the Pac-12 Conference and heading to the Big 12, it will be interesting to see if the level of interest grows because of competing in a tougher conference. With teams like Houston, Baylor, TCU and Kansas being some of the competition Arizona State will face, the numbers could fluctuate and attract more fans. Also, it is a given that the heated matchups with heated rival University of Arizona will always garner thousands of spectators in seats.

For Sun Devil hockey, they are a new member of the NCHC, which is arguably one of the toughest conferences in collegiate hockey around the country. Facing powerhouses like Michigan, North Dakota and Denver, hockey fans will get to see some of the best up-and-coming talent the sport has to offer in Tempe after the relocation of the Coyotes to Utah.
