The Colorado Avalanche announced that they’ve re-signed forward Fabian Lysell to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 campaign. Colorado acquired Lysell’s signing rights from the Boston Bruins on the second day of the 2026 NHL Draft in exchange for the signing rights to forward Ivan Ivan.

Lysell, 23, was once regarded as a top prospect in the Bruins’ system. Boston selected Lysell with the 21st overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, being their only first-round pick between the 2019 and 2024 NHL Drafts.

The early returns looked promising. Lysell joined the WHL’s Vancouver Giants in his post-draft season, registering 22 goals and 62 points in 53 games with a +10 rating, with an additional four goals and 21 points in 12 postseason contests.

The native of Göteborg, Sweden, joined the professional ranks ahead of the 2022-23 season with the AHL’s Providence Bruins. It was a quality rookie campaign, finishing with 14 goals and 37 points in 54 games with a -12 rating. Still, Lysell followed that up with a much better performance, scoring 15 goals and 50 points in 56 games throughout the 2023-24 season.

It was after his 2023-24 performance that Lysell’s pedigree as a prospect was at its highest. Although he didn’t begin the 2024-25 season with Boston, he didn’t have to wait too long, making his NHL debut on December 28th of that year. Unfortunately, his first opportunity at the NHL didn’t go as planned, as he registered only one goal and three points in 12 games.

Unfortunately, since then, Lysell has failed to garner any additional NHL opportunities. The Bruins have given him several chances, particularly in training camp and preseason, but Lysell has so far failed to stand out amongst his peers. Becoming a change-of-scenery candidate, the Avalanche took a flyer on him.
