The Colorado Avalanche have signed veteran defenseman Christian Wolanin to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2026-27 season. The agreement is a two-way deal worth the NHL minimum salary of $850,000, while carrying a $400,000 salary at the American Hockey League level.
Wolanin, 31, spent the 2025-26 campaign with the Providence Bruins, where he finished with seven goals and 24 assists for 31 points in 53 regular-season games. He ranked second among Providence defensemen in scoring, tied for first in assists, led the club’s blue line with four power-play goals, and shared the team lead among defensemen with four game-winning goals. His four power-play tallies also tied for sixth among all AHL defensemen. He added one assist in two Calder Cup Playoff games.
Wolanin has appeared in 86 NHL regular-season games with the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and Vancouver Canucks, recording six goals and 17 assists for 23 points. His best NHL season came with Ottawa in 2018-19, when he set career highs with 30 games played, four goals, eight assists, and 12 points while finishing fifth among Senators defensemen in scoring. He made his NHL debut on March 22, 2018, against the Edmonton Oilers.
Although NHL opportunities have been limited in recent years, Wolanin has consistently produced at the AHL level. Across 291 career regular-season AHL games with Belleville, Ontario, Abbotsford, and Providence, he has accumulated 31 goals and 177 assists for 208 points. His breakout campaign came in 2022-23 with Abbotsford, when he led all AHL defensemen with 49 assists and 55 points, earning the Eddie Shore Award as the league’s best defenseman along with First All-Star Team honors.
Wolanin also owns an impressive postseason resume in the AHL. He has collected 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) in 36 Calder Cup Playoff games, including a career-best 10-point postseason in 2024-25 with Abbotsford, helping the Canucks win the Calder Cup championship.
Before turning professional, the left-shot defenseman played three seasons at the University of North Dakota, amassing 22 goals and 50 assists in 109 games. As a junior in 2017-18, he garnered 35 points in 40 games and earned NCHC Second All-Star Team recognition. He was also part of North Dakota’s 2016 NCAA Frozen Four championship team. Before college, he spent four seasons in the USHL with Green Bay and Muskegon, recording 75 points in 165 games.
Internationally, Wolanin represented the United States at the IIHF World Championship in 2019 and 2021. During the 2021 tournament, he led American defensemen in scoring with one goal and five assists in 10 games while helping the United States win the bronze medal.
The signing also brings a family connection to the organization. Christian is the son of former NHL defenseman Craig Wolanin, who played 13 NHL seasons and was a member of Colorado’s 1996 Stanley Cup championship team after appearing in 364 games with the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise.
