Avalanche Sign Jared Bednar To Four-Year Extension

Barring unforeseen changes, the Colorado Avalanche will have the same head coach through the end of the decade. The Avalanche announced they have signed Jared Bednar to a four-year extension, taking him through the 2030-31 NHL season.

Bednar, 54, has coached since his playing career ended after the 2001-02 season. The Yorkton, SK native immediately joined the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays as an assistant coach for the 2002-03 campaign and was promoted to head coach ahead of the 2007-08 campaign. Bednar stewarded the Stingrays to a Kelly Cup in his second season as head coach.

After winning his first professional championship as a coach, Bednar took his talents to the AHL, serving as an assistant coach for the Abbotsford Heat for one season before being hired as a head coach for the Peoria Rivermen. After two years, the Springfield Falcons hired Bednar as an assistant coach before he eventually joined the Lake Erie Monsters as head coach for the 2015-16 season. Bednar guided the Monsters to the Calder Cup in his lone season as head coach.

After then-head coach Patrick Roy abruptly stepped down during training camp leading up to the 2016-17 season, Bednar was named head coach of the Avalanche on August 25, 2016, and hasn’t looked back.

Despite missing the postseason in his first year as Colorado’s bench boss, the Avalanche have made the Stanley Cup playoffs in nine consecutive years under Bednar’s stewardship. Although his playoff record is mostly first- and second-round exits, Bednar guided the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in 2022, becoming the first head coach to win a Kelly, Calder, and Stanley Cup.

There’s no question that Bednar is the most successful head coach in team history. He is currently the second-longest-tenured head coach in the NHL and has beaten other successful Avalanche head coaches such as Bob Hartley and Marc Crawford in wins by a large margin. Entering the 2025-26 season, Bednar has a career coaching record of 445-262-75 (.569 W%).
