Now, the Avalanche have a shot at even more hardware. On Wednesday, it was announced that center Brock Nelson was nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward.
Since coming over in a trade with the New York Islanders last season, Nelson has had a noticeable impact on the Avalanche. It took him some time to get acclimated late last season, but he hit the ground running in 2025-26.
Statistically, Nelson had one of the best seasons of his career. His 33 goals is the fourth-most for him in a season and his 65 points third-most. Combined with his elite defensive play, it has made him one of the most formidable two-way presences in the game.
It also solved a long-standing issue in terms of second-line center for the Avalanche. Nelson solidified the spot in a way that hadn’t been done size Nazem Kadri left via free agency after the 2022 Stanley Cup win. His impact has been a difference-maker for the Avalanche.
With a 2-0 series lead over the Wild, the Avalanche are full speed ahead in search of the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup. He will play an important role against one of the best teams in the NHL, especially on the defensive side of things.
At 34 years old, Nelson appears to be extending his prime when most are on the decline. When all is said and done, it could wind up being one of the best trades in the history of the Colorado Avalanche franchise.
