The Colorado Avalanche could soon be forced into another major roster decision as forward Martin Necas enters the final year of his contract.
The 26-year-old winger, acquired in the Mikk Rantanen trade last season, appears increasingly likely to finish out his current two-year, $13 million deal rather than negotiate an extension in-season.
Chris Johnston discussed the Avs-Necas situation on Monday's episode of "The Chris Johnston Show."
“I suppose Necas is maybe where the most intrigue might be found,” Johnston said. “He arrived in Denver last year as part of that Mikko Rantanen trade, and he doesn’t have the same length of history with the team, which doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to stay. It can be a little different sort of negotiation.”

Added Johnston: “He’s also comfortable letting it play out a little bit more. His agent and the Avalanche have certainly set the table for how talks might go, but it doesn’t seem like it’s as active of a conversation that’s happening around him.”
Johnston said Necas may be choosing to bet on himself next free agency instead of agreeing to a new contract during the regular season.
“If he’s getting to 80 or 90 points, maybe it doesn’t suit his interest to sign,” Johnston said. “Maybe he looks at the (free-agent) board around him emptying and considers, 'Hey, this is a good time to absolutely maximize my earnings.'”
Necas produced 83 points in 79 games last season between Carolina and Colorado and, according to The Fourth Period, could be seeking around $10 million per year on his next deal.
A report from RG Media's James Murphy indicated the Avalanche may not have the financial flexibility to extend Necas due to Cale Makar’s looming "nuclear" contract, as he could command upwards of $17 million annually beginning in 2027.
“I’d be stunned if he even finishes the season with the Avalanche, let alone extends in Colorado,” one NHL scout told RG Media. Another added, “They need to lock up Cale Makar next offseason, and even with the cap going up, where are they finding the money to give Necas?”
General manager Chris MacFarland confirmed this week that discussions with Necas’ agent remain unresolved. “I’ve chatted with the agent,” MacFarland said. “We’d like to get something done.”
If Colorado decides to move Necas before the trade deadline, several teams have already emerged as potential destinations.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers are considered leading candidates, while the Anaheim Ducks, Philadelphia Flyers, and San Jose Sharks have also shown interest because of their cap space and roster needs.
