The Pittsburgh Penguins seemingly have a goalie of the future in Joel Blomqvist, but now he's reportedly dealing with an undisclosed injury as he looks to get back on the ice in the AHL.
While the Penguins have had up-and-down goaltending all season long, they potentially saw a glimpse of the future with Joel Blomqvist, who played in 15 games for the team this season.
During that stretch, Blomqvist posted a 3.81 GAA and an .885 save percentage, and while the numbers overall don't look great, he flashed plenty of potential during that time, with many seeing him as a future full-time NHLer.
Now however, he's reportedly dealing with an undisclosed injury according to reporter Seth Rorabaugh, who notes that his gear remains in the Penguins facility in Cranberry despite being assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.
The 23-year old has been stellar in the AHL this season with a .910 save percentage and a 2.93 GAA on the season, but unfortunately, this injury appears to be holding him back from getting consistent playing time down at that level.
The former second-round draft pick has filled many in the organization with confidence and hope for his future, but with this injury, it's unclear if he'll recover by the end of this season in order to show off just how good he can be for the future.
With Tristan Jarry potentially on the way out in the summer if the team can find a trade partner to take on his deal, Blomqvist becomes even more important for the Penguins, but for now, he needs to get through the injury and get back on the ice before he can prove how good he can be for the future of the organization.
