The Edmonton Oilers got some bad news this week: Zach Hyman won’t be back in the lineup until at least November. Hyman, who underwent wrist surgery in late May, has been making steady progress in his recovery, but it’s clear he’s not ready to start the season. Hyman isn’t expected to return until around November 1, meaning he’ll miss the opening month of the 2025–26 campaign.
Hyman’s absence leaves a notable hole in the Oilers’ top six. Last season, he scored 27 goals and added 44 points in 73 games—a dip from his previous two seasons, where he had 83 and 77 points, respectively. Still, his value isn’t just in the numbers. Hyman’s grit, puck protection, and ability to complement Connor McDavid on the top line make him a player the Oilers rely on in high-leverage situations. When healthy, he drives offense while also setting a physical tone and wearing down opposing defenders.
With Hyman out, the Oilers will need other forwards to step up. Players on the second line and depth wings will likely see more ice time, and the coaching staff will have to shuffle minutes to keep the top-six punch intact. The team’s power play may also feel the difference; Hyman’s smart positioning and net-front presence are hard to replace. Beyond the stat sheet, Hyman brings leadership and energy that can lift the team in tight games—a presence that will be missed in October.
The good news is that Hyman’s recovery seems to be on track. The fact that he’s no longer in a cast and has resumed skating is a positive sign. By November, the team hopes he will be back to full strength, slotting back alongside McDavid and helping Edmonton regain its offensive balance.
For now, though, the Oilers will have to weather the early-season storm without one of their most consistent two-way forwards. It’s a test of depth and adaptability. The team will need contributions from the supporting cast to keep pace in a competitive Pacific Division. Hyman’s return will be a welcome boost. However, until then, Edmonton has to figure out how to keep the offense humming without one of its key pieces.
