Barzal Healthy Scratch Sends Message About Islanders’ Culture

There are a few New York Islanders fans who aren’t thrilled about the news that Mat Barzal is being made a healthy scratch on Thursday, but the organization has made one thing very clear with the move: no one is above the team. Barzal will be a healthy scratch on Thursday in Raleigh after arriving late to the bus. Head coach Patrick Roy confirmed the move, as well as an update that Cal Ritchie will make his debut.

The Barzal decision is meant to send a message about the culture GM Mathieu Darche is trying to instill.

While some may question sidelining a top player in a meaningful game, this isn’t just about one instance of tardiness. Sources suggest this was likely the “last straw” after Barzal had been given leeway in the past. The Islanders are showing that accountability and professionalism are non-negotiable, even if it means temporarily weakening the lineup. Ritchie will get an opportunity to show what some of the team’s youth and future looks like.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun tweeted, “This is very much about the culture new GM Mathieu Darche wants to create with Isles. Darche comes from Tampa, where last year Brayden Point was also scratched for a similar reason.” In other words, the standard is the same across the board for all players, regardless of experience or skill level.

Barzal is expected to return when the Islanders head to Washington on Friday. This is not a long-term concern.

Are The Islanders Making the Right Decision with Barzal?

Considering the Islanders are 4-4-1 and Barzal has eight points in nine games this season, he’ll be missed from the lineup. Still, the Islanders’ firm approach could prevent similar incidents from happening or from letting a minor issue become a bigger one.

It’s a bold move, but it sends a clear signal.
