According to NHL and TSN insider Darren Dreger, Connor Hellebuyck could be traded within in the next 24 hours. “Okay, twist in the plot. Connor Hellebuyck trade talks are escalating it could go down today. Busy day developing. Stay tuned,” Dreger wrote on Friday afternoon.
This follows a report from Dreger on Thursday that read, “There’s a sense there could be an agreement between the Jets and Hellebuyck to delay his physical until a later date out of respect to the Heritage Classic. This weekend is about the game. Meanwhile, the focus to trade the star goalie remains.”
As for where Hellebuyck might be headed, there could be a few options.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres have been linked, as have the Utah Mammoth in recent days. The New York Rangers might be looking for a goaltender, but the belief is they would a third party in a three-team trade that would send Hellebuyck elsewhere. After the Hurricanes’ loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, some are wondering whether that high-event affair was the final push behind a trade. The latest news comes from Elliotte Friedman, who reported the Canes have an offer on the table for Hellebuyck that doesn’t include Alexander Nikishin.
The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings were also linked, although it wasn’t known if Hellebuyck was willing to accept a trade to the Sharks.
Hellebuyck’s suspension lifts on Friday, which means that he could choose to rejoin the Jets. That’s something they don’t want. However, they also don’t want to be stuck paying his salary while he sits at home, something they’d have to do if he’s no longer suspended.
More to come…
