Perhaps one of the most under appreciated Chicago Blackhawks, Ilya Mikheyev is due for a huge payday outside of Chicago. Per reports, Mikheyev is hitting the free agency market on Wednesday, July 1 and should get a huge payday given the strength of this year’s class.

That said, we’re not here to talk about the future, we’re here to talk about the past. Mikheyev is our next player up in our player grade series before he potentially departs in free agency.

Story of the Season

Ilya Mikheyev entered this season coming off one of the best seasons of his career. 2024-25 was Mikheyev’s second 20-goal season, and his highest career-point season with 34. Believe it or not, although Mikheyev only tallied 18 goals in 2025-26, he set another new career high with 36 points.

In addition to a better offensive output, Mikheyev helped anchor one of the league’s best penalty kill units in the league. Even though a fair amount of those pieces were shipped away at the deadline (Connor Murphy, Jason Dickinson), the group still held on to be a top unit at season’s end. Losing Mikheyev will hurt for the Blackhawks, as his defensive prowess is one of his best attributes.

Regardless, Mikheyev put together a great season and was an important piece for the Blackhawks. He played all over the lineup, was fourth on the team in scoring, and held down the fort on the penalty kill. In a weak free agency year, Blackhawks fans saw why Mikheyev is hitting the market. He’s due for a huge payday.

Player Grades

Blackhawks Cowboy’s Grade: B+

Mikheyev was the most consistent weapon on the ice for the Chicago Blackhawks night in and night out. Prior to the trade deadline, Mikheyev, Jason Dickinson, and Connor Murphy were three of the most feared penalty killers in the league. Mikeheyev had a respectable 36 points, finding chemistry with players like Anton Frondell and Frank Nazar. A very solid piece.

Tony Marchese’s Grade: B+

Mikheyev was absolutely instrumental once again on one of the league’s best penalty kills. While he wasn’t traded at the deadline, it doesn’t seem like he will be back in Chicago next season. That’s unfortunate, as he was incredibly valuable to the team on both 5-on-5 and the PK.

Ron Luce’s Grade: A-

18 goals, excellent two-way prowess, and a big body with speed, how can one not give Ilya Mikheyev a high grade? The guy has been special in his two seasons with the Blackhawks, and they will certainly miss him if he decides to sign elsewhere this summer. A contract extension is still possible, but the Hawks would miss him too much if he leaves. A-level season.

What’s On Tap Next?

Ilya Mikheyev will likely don a new uniform next season. With free agency beginning on Wednesday, the Blackhawks will need to fill another forward spot. That said, there are few playes out there who can one-for-one fill Mikheyev’s role.
