For the first time in our 2025-26 player grade series, a Chicago Blackhawks goalie is the subject of the spotlight. Following his first season as the full-time, top dog in Chicago, Spencer Knight is the next player under the microscope.

Story of the Season

Spencer Knight set a career high in games played with 55, far exceeding his previous high of 38. Knight has established himself as both the present and future in net for Chicago, and will surely continue to grow into his own. The 25-year-old put up some respectable numbers, including a 2.82 goals against average, .902 save percentage, and 19 wins. His 25 losses were also a career high, but a bad Blackhawks team certainly doesn’t help the win-loss record.

That said, Knight is on a path to stardom in net. He had some low points during the season, but also played some incredible hockey at points as well. Knight should benefit from a less-chaotic schedule in 2026-27, as well as adapting to the amount of work he’ll be expected to uphold.

Player Grades

Blackhawks Cowboy’s Grade: A

Somehow, at only 25 years old, Spencer Knight is being seen as a veteran presence and more than that. He is really good at playing goalie. Despite what the raw numbers say, Knight had a great year. The hot streak that defined the early-season Hawks was almost entirely due to Spencer Knight playing like the best goaltender in the world. In October and November, Knight had a .918 sv% and a .910 sv%, respectively.

After the team lost many important defensive anchors like Connor Murphy, Jason Dickinson, and Matt Greczlyk, Knight started to taper. However, his impact and play cannot be understated in this season.

Tony Marchese’s Grade: B+

Spencer Knight clearly remains the Blackhawks’ undisputed No. 1 goaltender and will be for the foreseeable future. I will give him a B for his grade this season, even though his statistics were absolutely phenomal, there were a few tough stretches of the season where a few little things could be cleaned up. Overall, he had an excellent first full season in a Blackhawks sweater and I am looking forward to watching many more to come.

Ron Luce’s Grade: A

Its crazy, the Blackhawks defense struggled immensely over the course of the season as they grew together, but Spencer Knight was there to save the day. Underlying numbers suggested Knight had an incredible season, ranking top-10 in a number of categories. Knight still finished the season with respectable overall numbers. He would have been an A+ for me had the workload not caught up with him at times later in the season, but Knight looks like the workhorse goaltender that the Hawks were looking for.

What’s On Tap Next?

Spencer Knight will start his new three-year extension this coming season, earning just under $6 million annually. If Knight continues building on last season, the Blackhawks will have one of the best contracts in the league on their hands. Ideally, Knight is the Blackhawks’ backstop for years to come as the team ascends into a new era of, hopefully, competitive hockey.
