Chicago Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar left Friday’s game against the Calgary Flames after sustaining an apparent injury in the first period.

The 21-year-old forward fell awkwardly to the ice after colliding with Flames winger Joel Farabee near the 13:00 mark of the opening frame at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Blackhawks subsequently announced that Nazar would not return early in the game’s second period.

Through 15 games with the Blackhawks to start the 2025-26 regular season, Nazar has five goals and 11 points. He left Friday’s contest shortly after Tyler Bertuzzi opened the scoring with a power-play goal to make it a 1-0 game.

A first-round pick (No. 13 overall) of the Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL Draft, Nazar spent his first two post-draft seasons at the University of Michigan before turning pro in the Blackhawks organization at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

After starting the 2024-25 season with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, Nazar finished the year with the Blackhawks, scoring 12 goals and 26 points in 53 games. The Detroit product has shown impressive chemistry with Connor Bedard in his second NHL season and has emerged as one of Chicago’s offensive leaders.

Entering Friday’s action, the Blackhawks occupied fifth place in the NHL’s Central Division with a 6-5-3 record and a plus-four goal differential through 14 games. The Blackhawks have not qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2020.

The Blackhawks acquired the pick they used to draft Nazar from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for center Kirby Dach. This past August, Nazar signed a seven-year contract extension with the Blackhawks carrying an annual cap hit just shy of $6.6 million.

Through 71 career NHL games over parts of three games with the Blackhawks, Nazar has collected 18 goals and 38 points. He recorded 19 goals and 48 points in 54 games at Michigan during his collegiate career.
