Even amidst a wave of injuries to Chicago Blackhawks forwards, Boris Katchouk has been the odd man out of the group over the past week. As a result, the team placed him on waivers on Monday.
Katchouk came to the Blackhawks in the trade that sent Brandon Hagel to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The former second-round pick has been in and out of Chicago's lineup over the past two-plus seasons, logging 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 96 games since the trade. And when Katchouk plays, he's typically limited to a fourth-line role which has resulted in an average ice time of just 11:40 per game.
In 17 games this season, the Ontario native has four points (two goals, two assists) in 17 games. He last played on Dec. 3 and has since been watching from the press box while the likes of Joey Anderson, MacKenzie Entwistle, Cole Guttman, and Reese Johnson help comprise the Blackhawks' bottom-six forward group.
Due to this alignment of the current depth chart, the Blackhawks want Katchouk to see action regularly at the AHL level with the Rockford IceHogs. The Blackhawks will find out if that plan can become a reality on Tuesday after the waiver-claim period passes.
