Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson has a plethora of high draft picks in his prospect cupboard. Among that talent, few prospects have generated excitement the way Frank Nazar has. The Michigan product is largely considered the top prospect in the Blackhawks' system and is expected to be a huge piece of the future behind the face of the franchise, Connor Bedard.
The Blackhawks traded Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens for the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. With that pick, the Blackhawks selected Nazar. Although the centreman missed most of his freshman season with the Wolverines, he rebounded nicely in his sophomore year. Nazar finished sixth in points on the Wolverines' roster with 41 points (17 goals, 24 assists) in 41 games. Additionally, the youngster dominated at the World Juniors for Team USA, posting eight assists in seven games en route to a Gold Medal.
Following the end of Michigan's season, Nazar made the tough decision to turn pro and get some time with the Blackhawks before the 2023-24 season concluded.
Frank Nazar only appeared in three games for the Blackhawks but made a hell of an impact when he did. Debuting against the Carolina Hurricanes, Nazar scored on a beautiful breakaway pass from Seth Jones. Although that was his only NHL point in his short stint with Chicago, Nazar did a lot of good things to get fans excited.
Nazar had a swagger about him that most college sophomores simply don't possess at the NHL level. Aside from his beautiful goal, Nazar was pulling off spin-o-ramas on defenders in the final games of the season. Now, Nazar has a buzz about him entering the 2024-25 season.
Frank Nazar made a strong first impression by scoring in his first NHL game in front of the United Center crowd. There's plenty to be excited about with the Michigan product, but he'll still require some development time to reach his full potential. But from the small cup of coffee — more like an espresso shot — we have to judge him on, he flashed enough to earn a solid B from me.
Frank Nazar showed some sparks of offense in his small first taste of NHL action that will leave many longing for his first full season with the Blackhawks. While it's just a three-game sample size to evaluate, the 20-year-old didn't look too overmatched in his first NHL stint. The youngster will get a much larger look in the coming years, but showing up and scoring in your debut is cool and tough. That earns him a B.
Perhaps I'm the most generous with my grades, but what Frank Nazar did after a long season of college hockey and an injury-abbreviated campaign the season prior was nothing short of impressive. After having an extended season with Michigan in the tournament and winning gold with Team USA in the World Juniors, Nazar still suited up for three games, played in the top six, and scored in his first career game. Given the flash of upside he showed in the small sample size, he gets a B+.
Frank Nazar is likely one of the few youngsters who will get an honest chance at making the Blackhawks' roster right out of training camp. However, if he even somewhat shows he isn't ready, a season full of opportunity awaits in Rockford. He'll surely be the top center and will play in every situation. There are few things better for his development into what the Hawks believe he can be down the road.
