Over the last few seasons, the Chicago Blackhawks and GM Kyle Davidson have been keen on making trades for players that teams need to move due to the salary cap, or players who may have fallen out of favor with their old clubs. Think Taylor Hall, Nick Foligno, Corey Perry, Jason Dickinson, Petr Mrazek, and others.
Before the 2024-25 season, Davidson pulled off yet another trade that fits in the aforementioned box. Needing a change of scenery, and the Vancouver Canucks wanting to move on from the player, Ilya Mikheyev waived his modified no-trade clause to join the Blackhawks. Mikheyev, the rights to Sam Lafferty, and a 2027 second-round pick were acquired by the Blackhawks for nothing more than a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Ilya Mikheyev was added as depth, but fans were not expecting the production that the veteran produced during the 2024-25 season. Mikheyev set career highs in points and games played, while falling just short of tying his career high in goals. In 80 games, Mikheyev tallied 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) and found a way to produce no matter where he was in the lineup.
In addition to his offense, Mikheyev was a worthy addition on the defensive side. The veteran found a home on the team's penalty kill, and even received one fifth-place vote for the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward. Although far from winning it, it is a testament to his impact on the 200-foot game.
Perhaps the best trade made by Kyle Davidson in his tenure as GM, Mikheyev should have a big impact on the team once again in 2025-26. Although he'll turn 31 early next season, there is a case to be made for Mikheyev to stick around as a sturdy, middle-six veteran. However, he may draw enough attention to earn a spot with a contender and compete for Stanley Cups after next season.
The trade that brought Ilya Mikheyev on the Blackhawks will be underrated. Mikheyev is fast. He brought offense when other veteran players couldn't. Is he a top-six player? No. But he is an enticing trade piece should Mikheyev carry over his 20 goals into next season.
Mikheyev had such an impressive debut season for the Hawks, it is pretty hard not to give him an A. 20 goals, three of them short-handed in 80 games played is pretty solid, and truthfully a lot more than I had expected to see from him in any of those three categories at the time he was acquired. I'll stick with a B+ for his grade because despite career highs in many categories for him, it feels possible that there might be a little more there that could make him an even more valuable player for the Hawks and I hope to see that next season.
Perhaps my favorite newcomer not named Teuvo Teravainen, Ilya Mikheyev was exactly what the Blackhawks needed to add to their roster. His speed, size, and ability to kill penalties were all incredibly welcome in the lineup. Posting 20 goals, Mikheyev is a player I'd like to see in Chicago for a season or two more than his contract currently keeps him in town.
With one more season left on his current deal, Ilya Mikheyev's future in Chicago beyond next season is up in the air. However, the veteran proved he can be a huge asset no matter where he plays. This coming season, more of the 2024-25 production will be expected to help the Blackhawks take another step forward in the course of the rebuild.
