Entering the 2024 free agency period, the Chicago Blackhawks were expected to be relatively active. One of the names linked to the team was former first-round pick of the franchise, Teuvo Teravainen. The Finnish forward was traded with Bryan Bickell to the Carolina Hurricanes to clear cap space following the 2015-16 season. Last summer, the return finally happened.

Teravainen was selected 18th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. He looked like a promising forward for the Blackhawks, but the trade sent him to Carolina where he had a very respectable career. The team let him get to free agency, and now he's returned to help the new wave of franchise pillars.

Story of the Season

Teravainen was originally added to, expectedly, play with Connor Bedard. The Finnish veteran started on Bedard's wing early, but moved around the lineup for the rest of the season. No matter where he played however, Teravainen produced. He found success on the power play, and racked up his best offensive season since 2021-22.

With 58 points (15 goals, 43 assists), Teravainen finished third on the Blackhawks in scoring only trailing Connor Bedard and a career season from Ryan Donato. Teravainen's goal scoring took a huge step back from the season before, but his playmaking ability was heavily welcomed in the team's lineup.

Player Grades

Steve Kwiatkowski's Grade: B-

Teuvo was brought on to play in the top-six and potentially be Connor Bedard's wingmate. Both head coaches that Chicago had played Teuvo in a bottom-six role far too many times than I'm comfortable with. His production wasn't bad (58 points in 82 games), but he also made questionable decisions that led to turnovers and goals against.

Tony Marchese's Grade: B

The one that never should have gone away came back, and he performed slightly above expectations. After what was a bit of a slow start and lots of line juggling, Teravainen quietly started racking up assists at a fairly high rate, enough that he wound up third overall at the end of the season in points, trailing only Connor Bedard and Ryan Donato.

Ron Luce's Grade: A

I know I'm the only person that is going to feel this way, but Teuvo Teravainen had an A-level season for the Blackhawks. Just because the team wasn't great and he didn't play the whole season with Connor Bedard, doesn't mean he did not have a fantastic season. Teravainen had his first season with 82 games played since 2018-19, his best offensive season since 2021-22 when he posted 65 points, and posted his sixth season of 55+ points. Teravainen was spectacular, and saying he wasn't because he didn't stick with Bedard is, well, garbage.

What's On Tap Next?

After signing a three-year deal, Teuvo Teravainen is here to stay. With two more seasons on his deal, fans can expect a healthy dose of #86 in the coming seasons. In 2025-26, another great season could be enough to really elevate some of the upcoming franchise pillars.
