Sam Rinzel of the University of Minnesota has been named the Defensive Player of the Year in Big Ten hockey. Rinzel is a highly touted prospect in the Blackhawks pipeline, selected 25th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. Rinzel scored 10 goals and 21 assists in 39 games in the 2024-25 NCAA season and led all Big Ten defensemen in points and goals.

At 6'4'' and 190 lbs, Sam Rinzel has a large frame and impressive skating. When Rinzel was selected 25th overall in 2022, the expectation was that he would need a lot of time to develop. He could skate well but needed to fill out his frame. After his freshmen year with the University of Minnesota, Rinzel focused on adding muscle, which paid dividends this season and improved his defensive game.
Sam Rinzel and the University of Minnesota Gophers punched their ticket to the NCAA's Frozen Four tournament. Whenever Rinzel's postseason ends, we can expect the Chicago Blackhawks to sign him. At that point, it's likely that Rinzel will make a brief NHL appearance or get a head start with the Rockford IceHogs. Rinzel will most likely spend most, if not all, of the 2025 season with the IceHogs.
The Blackhawks' future blueline looks impressive and exciting. While I have my concerns about the future of the top-six forwards, I think Kyle Davidson is doing a good job of building this team from the back out. And it's not just the blue line. If the pieces hit, the Blackhawks should have a very solid bottom-six. But that's the catch: the pieces have to hit. We won't know how this thing plays out, but we can be happy that Sam Rinzel is taking the right steps in his development.
