According to a team announcement, the Chicago Blackhawks have recalled forward Dominic Toninato from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. In a corresponding roster move, the Blackhawks placed Andrew Mangiapane on the injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
Toninato, 32, has been a depth forward for the Blackhawks for the past two years. After a five-year run with the Winnipeg Jets, Toninato signed a two-year, $1.7MM ($850K AAV) contract with Chicago as an unrestricted free agent.
With the Jets, Toninato served as an injury substitute, except in 2021-22, when he played 77 games. Still, he offered little when he was on the roster, finishing his tenure in Winnipeg with eight goals and 21 points in 104 games with a +8 rating, averaging 8:43 of ice time per game. Regardless, he became a quality performer with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.
It was much the same during his first year with the Blackhawks organization. Toninato finished the 2025-26 campaign with one assist in eight games with the Blackhawks. Understandably, he had a much better year with AHL Rockford.
Despite limited appearances due to call-ups, Toninato was one of the IceHogs’ top forwards. He finished the 2026-27 season with 16 goals and 43 points in 52 games with a -8 rating. This season, he scored a goal in Rockford’s opening contest.
Meanwhile, Mangiapane’s placement on the injured reserve was expected. A few days ago, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Mangiapane was considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury he suffered in Chicago’s opening game against the Vegas Golden Knights. He went scoreless in 5:23 of action.
