The Chicago Blackhawks recalled defenseman Ethan Del Mastro from the Rockford IceHogs on Thursday, Jan. 23. The Blackhawks blue line is now younger and a bit more crowded. At the time of this writing, there are eight defensemen on the roster. A little interesting because this comes over a month ahead of the NHL trade deadline (Mar. 7).
Ethan Del Mastro (22 years old) participated in Thursday's morning skate on a pair with Nolan Allan. Additionally, Scott Powers of The Athletic provided some context on Del Mastro's call-up:
The Blackhawks wanted to reward Ethan Del Mastro for his recent play in Rockford. Anders Sorensen wasn't specific what that means with the Hawks currently carrying eight defensemen. I guess we'll have a better idea before tomorrow's game.

Del Mastro has eight points in 28 games this season, which ranks third among Rockford defensemen. Last year, Del Mastro was rewarded for his play in Rockford with a two-game stint in the NHL. In those two games, he was on the ice for two goals against, had a 44.83 5v5 Corsi, and an expected goals share of 53.71%. Tiny sample size, but from what I recall he looked solid in those games.
I'm all for bringing the kids up. What's interesting is that the call-up comes ahead of the NHL trade deadline in early March. Del Mastro is the eighth defenseman on the Hawks roster. Could something be cooking on the trade front?
The Blackhawks play again this Friday at the United Center against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will air on CHSN.
