The Chicago Blackhawks selected Anton Frondell with the third overall pick. The pick comes to no one's surprise as Blackhawks insiders like Scott Powers made it apparent that if Michael Misa was taken, the Blackhawks would pick either Anton Frondell or Caleb Desnoyers.
While some fans may be disappointed, the Blackhawks are still getting a solid center with high potential. Frondell has been playing in Sweden's top professional league as a 17-year-old. It's expected that Frondell will return to Sweden next year, so Blackhawks fans may have to wait before they can see him on the ice.
It will be interesting to see where Frondell fits in the Blackhawks' lineup in the future. General Manager Kyle Davidson has made it clear that he expects Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar to be the Blackhawks' top two centers. Since Frondell projects to be a center, one of Nazar or Bedard could be moved to the wing if plans change. Additionally, Frondell has been playing on the wing in Sweden, so while his skillset is best suited for a center, moving him to the wing is always an option as well.
The worst-case scenario would be Frondell not panning out to be a top-six player; at the least, the Blackhawks would still have a solid third-line center. But as with any prospect, there are so many unknowns. As Blackhawks fans are used to hearing by now, we'll just have to be patient.
