The Chicago Blackhawks solidified their leadership group on Friday by signing forward Nick Foligno to a two-year contract extension. Foligno's deal will carry a $4.5 million annual average value.

The Blackhawks didn't name a captain for the 2023-24 season, but Foligno has taken over the role in a de facto manner. Bringing leadership experience from his days with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Foligno has been a stabilizing locker-room presence for a rebuilding Blackhawks team.
In his first season with the Blackhawks, Foligno has 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) through 39 games. Beyond his production, the 36-year-old has served as a protector for the Blackhawks' up-and-coming players, especially Connor Bedard.

While Foligno probably wouldn't fetch such a hefty AAV from a contending team, the Blackhawks have plenty of salary-cap space to accommodate the deal. Foligno's contract extension runs through the 2025-26 season, giving the Blackhawks' young talents ample time to grow into leadership roles.
