It’s a reunion. But not in the way you expect.
The Chicago Blackhawks have reportedly traded Nick Foligno to the Minnesota Wild, allowing him to play with his brother, Marcus Foligno, for the first time in their NHL careers.
The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported the move on Daily Faceoff’s trade deadline show.
Foligno was traded for future considerations.
The 38-year-old is currently in his 19th NHL season, registering 11 points in 37 games a captain of the Blackhawks. Known as a strong leader throughout his career, Foligno was signed by Chicago in 2023 to help mentor the team’s youth during the team’s rebuild – most notably, Connor Bedard. During his three years with the team, Foligno set a high of 17 goals and 37 points in 2023-24, then followed up with 35 points the following year.
Drafted 28th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2006, Foligno has never been known as a big-time producer. But he did set a personal best with 31 goals and 73 points in 2014-15, the year before becoming Columbus’ captain. From there, he continued to be a 30-50-point guy for the Blue Jackets, where he’d establish himself as a hard-working, two-way forward. Foligno had stints in Toronto and Boston before joining Chicago, serving as a middle-six forward for the most part.
Foligno has 250 goals and 608 points in 1,270 career games. He is set to become a UFA this summer after the conclusion of his two-year deal worth $4.5 million per season.
The Wild have been busy on the trade front in recent weeks, acquiring Bobby Brink earlier in the morning, Jeff Petry and Michael McCarron earlier this week and star defenseman Quinn Hughes back in December. The Wild have shipped out Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Michael Milne, Boris Katchouk (who they acquired in the Milne deal), David Jiricek and a couple of draft picks to make it happen.
The #mnwild have $9.75M of Deadline cap space prior to acquiring to Nick Foligno @ $4.5M. Adding his full cap hit would leave them with $5.25M in available cap space. https://t.co/3PzqTicL7y
