The Columbus Blue Jackets are not having quite the season they hoped for back in September.
With a young, talented nucleus in place and some momentum to build upon from a respectable showing in the 2023-24 campaign, many saw the Jackets taking a leap toward playoff contention.
That hasn’t materialized. With a record of 18-16-7, Columbus finds itself in last place in an Eastern Conference that has very little separation between the Jackets in the basement and the teams currently holding on to wild card playoff spots.
Even after trading for Mason Marchment, could Columbus pivot to selling in a market where nearly every other team will be looking to buy?
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed their thoughts on where general manager Don Waddell should go from here.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Expectations were lower in Columbus. I think coming into the year if someone would have said halfway point of the year, Columbus is dead in the East… that makes sense. My one thing for Columbus, as much as the East is very mushy right now and they’re six points out of a playoff spot… I would say if you’re Columbus, embrace being a seller. You’re 18-23 straight up. I know the loser points make you look a little bit better, but this isn’t an offense that’s good enough. This isn’t a defense that’s good enough… I think they should embrace being the maybe one true seller in the East.
Carter Hutton: And maybe it adds some value to get a pick, to see where you’re at… I do think there is some positivity around Jet Greaves. I think every time he’s in the net he plays well. He gives them a chance to win.
