Blue Jackets sign Dysin Mayo to one-year contract
Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with defenseman Dysin Mayo, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

Mayo, 28, spent the entirety of the 2024-25 regular season with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, collecting eight goals and 19 points in 58 games. The Victoria, BC product shoots right and stands in at 6’0″ and 190 pounds.

The Blue Jackets did not disclose the financial terms of Mayo’s new deal. (His previous contract was a three-year, one-way agreement with a $950,000 cap hit that he signed with the Arizona Coyotes back in 2022).

A fifth-round pick (No. 133 overall) of the Coyotes in the 2014 NHL Draft, Mayo appeared in parts of seven AHL seasons with the Springfield Falcons and Tucson Roadrunners to begin his professional career before finally making his NHL debut with Arizona in the 2021-22 season.

Mayo emerged from relative obscurity to skate in 67 games with the Coyotes in 2021-22, collecting four goals and 12 points while averaging 20:55 per night. He scored his first NHL goal in his ‘Yotes debut against the Edmonton Oilers on October 21, 2021.

After skating in 15 more games with the Coyotes the following season, Mayo was demoted back to the AHL and did not finish the 2022-23 campaign in Arizona, ultimately being included in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights in February 2023.

Mayo spent the final two-and-a-half seasons of his contract with the Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate, establishing himself as a quality top-four option in Henderson but never being recalled to play for Vegas. He did join the Golden Knights as a ‘Black Ace’ during their successful run to the Stanley Cup in 2023 and received a championship ring but did not have his name engraved on the trophy.

Now with the Blue Jackets organization, Mayo should fill a similar role as the one he occupied in Henderson, albeit potentially with more of an opportunity to step into an NHL spot if called upon. If nothing else, he’ll be asked to serve as a mentor to the likes of Corson Ceulemans, Stanislav Svozil, Daemon Hunt, and Guillaume Richard with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.
