A hard-working college veteran has earned himself an NHL contract.
On Sunday, Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell announced that the team has signed forward Josh Eernisse to a one-year, entry-level contract. The deal is for the 2026-27 campaign, with Eernisse joining the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, for the remainder of the season on a professional tryout.

The signing comes just three days after Eernisse’s college hockey career came to an end. He and his Michigan Wolverines were eliminated by the eventual NCAA champion Denver Pioneers in double overtime in the Men’s Frozen Four this past Thursday.
Waddell recognized that Eernisse brings more to the Blue Jackets system than meets the eye.
“As we looked at a number of college free agents, we identified those that could fill an organizational need, and Josh does just that,” Waddell said in a release. “He is a big, strong right winger who skates well and has great character, and we are excited to welcome him to the Blue Jackets.”
Eernisse’s path to an NHL contract was far from clear. The Eagan, Minn. native went undrafted, starting his NCAA career with the University of St. Thomas in the fall of 2022. After a solid freshman campaign, he transferred to join the Wolverines, becoming an important depth player for head coach Brandon Naurato’s squad. Despite not being a noted offensive weapon, the former Tri-City Storm product made a difference in other facets of the game. A solid defensive player, he can be relied upon on the penalty kill.
The 24-year-old is coming off one of the most productive seasons of his NCAA career. In 38 games, he scored 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points, by far his best performance as a member of the Wolverines. He even scored a goal against the Pioneers on Thursday.
In 151 college games, Eernisse potted 34 goals and 31 assists for 65 points.
