Blues GameDay Preview: Cap Off Homestand Versus Bruins
St. Louis Blues Gameday Preview (The Hockey Writers)

The St. Louis Blues will look to get back on track Thursday when they host the Boston Bruins in the final game of their five-game homestand. The Blues have lost back-to-back games at Enterprise Center and have been shut out in consecutive contests.

Last Game: 2-0 Loss to Canadiens

St. Louis had plenty of opportunities against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, recording 46 shots on goal, but could not get a puck past goaltender Jacob Fowler. The Blues will need to find a way to finish their chances against a Boston team that enters the matchup near the top of the Atlantic Division.

Projected combinations are subject to change.

Blues’ Team Leaders

The Blues’ offense has been led by Mason McTavish, who has 10 points, including six goals. Dylan Holloway also has 10 points with three goals and seven assists. Jimmy Snuggerud is in third with eight points, including six goals and two assists.

Storyline No. 1: Haven’t Scored in 6 Periods

The Blues need to get their offense going after being shut out in consecutive home games. St. Louis fell 4-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes before losing 2-0 to Montreal on Tuesday.

The loss to the Canadiens was particularly frustrating because the Blues generated 46 shots on goal, their highest total of the season. However, Fowler stopped every attempt to earn the shutout.

St. Louis has shown it can generate offensive pressure, but that production needs to translate into goals. The Blues will have another difficult test against a Bruins team that has played well defensively this season.

Storyline No. 2: Bruins Bring One of the NHL’s Best Offenses

Boston enters Thursday’s matchup with a 9-3-1 record and sits atop the Atlantic Division. The Bruins have scored 49 goals through their first 13 games, putting them among the NHL’s highest-scoring teams.

David Pastrnak leads Boston’s attack with seven goals and 18 points. The Bruins also added forward J.J. Peterka during the offseason, and he has made an immediate impact with nine points in his first 13 games.

The Blues will need a strong defensive effort to slow down Boston’s offense. St. Louis cannot afford costly turnovers or odd-man rushes against a team capable of making opponents pay for mistakes.

Storyline No. 3: Toropchenko Looks to Build on Return

Alexey Toropchenko will be worth watching as he prepares to play his second game back from injury. The forward returned to the lineup after missing time and will look to regain his rhythm as the Blues close out their homestand against Boston.

Toropchenko brings a physical presence to the lineup and can help create opportunities through his forechecking and energy. His ability to win puck battles and make life difficult for opposing defenders could be important against a Bruins team that has been strong offensively.

As he gets more comfortable following his return, the Blues will hope Toropchenko can provide a boost to the fourth line and help St. Louis get back in the win column.
