The St. Louis Blues have a bit of a dilemma on their hands regarding Pavel Buchnevich.
The 31-year-old has hit the 20-goal mark in six straight seasons, with one 30-goal campaign sprinkled in the mix. He’s been reliable and has found a way to produce.
But that production has been declining over the years. Last season marked the fourth straight season in which his point total has fallen. And so, calls have gone out for the Blues to move on from the Russian forward.
That’s why this season is one in which Buchnevich needs to prove he truly belongs in the Blues’ lineup. With so many young forwards pushing for playing time, it’s getting to be crunch time for the former third-round selection of the New York Rangers.
So, what exactly does Buchnevich need to do to prove he truly belongs in the Blues’ lineup?
It starts with getting off to a strong start this season. While he’s still pointless in the team’s first two games this season, he’s looked good on the ice. The expectation, of course, will be that he can find his scoring touch soon enough.
But if he doesn’t, the Blues may be truly compelled to move him at whatever price point is possible.
It may just be that Buchnevich has reached a point in which he needs a change of scenery. If that’s the case, the Blues may be willing to give it to him.
Now, we’re not talking about turning him into a cap dump. What we’re talking about is facilitating a trade that could see him land with a contender looking for scoring depth. If that were the case, a trade wouldn’t be happening anytime soon. If anything, the Blues will want to give Buchnevich a fair shake this season. If he really struggles, that may have to make a decision.
And if he does, trading him might not be the best idea. That’s why, as contradictory as it may seem, trading Buchnevich after a strong start may be the best path forward for the Blues.
Let’s ponder that: If Buchnevich really tanks, the price tag will be so low on him that a trade just wouldn’t be worth it. Conversely, if Buchnevich really picks it up, his market could soar, allowing the Blues to turn a solid profit.
Tuesday night’s showing was encouraging. He picked up an assist in the final minute as the Blues brought the game to within one goal against the Chicago Blackhawks. So, it may just be a matter of time before we find out which is which.
