The St. Louis Blues have been the league’s best team since the 4 Nations Face-Off break in February. They’re 15-2-2 with a plus-34 goal differential in that stretch. They find themselves in a playoff spot with a legitimate chance to get the first wild card spot over the Minnesota Wild. A huge factor in their stretch of dominance has been young forward Zachary Bolduc. He’s been one of the best players on a team that’s been elite for the past month.
There hasn’t been enough talk about the way he’s played in his age-21 season. He’s been overshadowed by Dylan Holloway, Jordan Kyrou, and others. It’s perfectly fine for him to go under the radar, but I want to highlight just how good he’s been over the past month and change. Let’s get into why and how he’s broken out down the stretch of this season.
Bolduc put up elite offensive numbers in junior hockey with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s (QMJHL) Rimouski Oceanic and Quebec Remparts. He was taken with the 17th overall pick in the 2021 Draft. He’s always had an elite shot and it’s shown at the NHL level. I’ve been wildly impressed with his skill, effort, and overall two-way play this season. He gave the club a taste of what he could become last season in 25 games and he’s grown a lot under head coach Jim Montgomery this season.
In 65 games this season, he has 16 goals and 15 assists for 31 points. He also has a plus/minus of plus-19 and nearly 100 hits. More importantly, Bolduc’s play over the past month has been impressive to watch. The numbers speak for themselves and they are really good.
Since the 4 Nations break, he has 10 goals and three assists for 13 points in 19 games. He’s also a plus-9 and has three power-play goals in this stretch. In the month of March, he has eight goals and 11 points in 15 games while the team has a 12-2-1 record. He’s added a lot to the club’s power play with three goals on the man advantage in March. There’s no denying Bolduc’s impact on this team in a stretch where they’ve been the hottest team in the league.
The Blues have a boatload of young pieces in their organization. Bolduc is a big part of that alongside Jake Neighbours, Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg, Dalibor Dvorsky, Jimmy Snuggerud, Joel Hofer, and others. I’ve always thought this team needed to let the kids play this season and they’ve done that for the most part. The next step is giving Bolduc more ice time as well as putting Dvorsky and Snuggerud in the lineup. I understand not wanting to hurt the chemistry with the team on a nine-game winning streak right now, but these kids can play at a high level.
It’s been fun to watch Bolduc grow since the 4 Nations break. He’s shown a lot of what the club expected from him when they drafted him in 2021. It’s hard to also not give plenty of credit to Montgomery and his staff for what they’ve done with him, Holloway, Broberg, and other youngsters. The club has been free-flowing and shown a lot of decisiveness with this team right now and every player is reflecting that. They’ve been fun to watch and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle the last couple weeks of the season.
