NHL training camps will be getting underway in about a month, which means the start of the season is not far behind. News around the NHL has been slow as of late, pretty typical for this time of year; of course, for the Minnesota Wild, Quinn Hughes remains the topic whenever their team name does pop up.
Outside of Hughes, the Wild have a lot to look forward to, and with that comes predictions for what the team and players will do. There are expected predictions like Kirill Kaprizov scoring at least 40 goals or Matt Boldy registering at least 40 assists, but then there are the bold predictions. In this article, we’ll take a look at some bold predictions, ones that stand out from the rest, and since they’re bold, they may not come true, but they’re fun to think about regardless.
Playing in 84 games may not seem like a bold prediction, but when looking back at Kirill Kaprizov’s stats over the years, he’s never played a full season. He played in 81 games once back in 2021-22, his second full season. Since that point, he’s been injured every single season and missed a various number of games; even last season, when he missed four.
Obviously, playing a full season is important, especially when he’s one of the top players on the team, and they need him healthy to provide scoring. Speaking of scoring, Kaprizov scoring 60 goals is pretty bold considering he’s never hit 50. He’s come close with 47 goals but hasn’t been able to hit the mark yet.
He’d set a new career high with 50 goals, and of course, with 60 goals, that would be impressive not only for the Wild but the NHL as well. Connor McDavid, who has been the NHL’s scoring leader quite often, has hit 60 or more goals just once in his career, with 64 goals in the 2022-23 season. Kaprizov has the talent to score 60 goals; it’s just a matter of staying healthy and taking as many shots as he can.
Ever since Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes were paired together, they’ve pushed each other to be even better than they already were. Of course, everyone knew Faber had more potential and still does, but Hughes showed he could be even more of an impact than he already was. Both of these players have the ability to upgrade their play, and we’ll look at some bold predictions for each player, starting with Faber.
Faber has shown he’s capable of improving his game with every season, and adding Hughes just brought that out even more. The two bold predictions for Faber this season is he’ll hit 25 goals and block 175 shots. He’s proven he’s not afraid to take shots, and he’s scored goals because of that willingness, plus he continues to increase his stats every season. He’s also not hesitant to sacrifice his body to block any shots that try to make their way to his goaltender, which is why 175 is bold but not out of the question for him.
Now it’s Hughes’ turn for the bold predictions; he’s easily one of the best defensemen in the NHL, and he’s continued to prove that. His bold predictions are that he’ll hit 50 power-play points and 100 blocked shots. He’s already reached some pretty impressive numbers at even strength, but it would be great to see him hit that many power-play points and help keep the Wild’s man advantage strong; his highest has been 38 power-play points. On the defensive side, he’s never hit 100 blocks, but he’s been increasing his blocks over the last few seasons, and that number is, while also high, possible for him to reach.
This will mainly be about Jesper Wallstedt and his bold prediction, but we will throw in a combined prediction for both goaltenders as well. Wallstedt stepped up during the regular season, and while there were some bumps along the road as any rookie goaltender will have, he did quite well for himself. He accumulated 18 wins with nine losses and six overtime losses, plus four of those wins were in shutouts where he didn’t allow a single goal.
The prediction of Wallstedt hitting 30 wins in just his second full season may seem a bit high and hopeful, but he showed a whole new side to his game when he had the pressure of the postseason on his shoulders. He saw what he could do and gained a lot of confidence, so it’s not out of the question because he had 18 wins last season, and now he knows what he needs to do to be successful. Plus, with Filip Gustavsson likely missing the start of the season due to surgery recovery, Wallstedt will have the net until they take it away.
The prediction for both goaltenders together is that they will combine for 10 shutouts throughout the season, up from their eight the season before. That isn’t much of an increase, but shutouts are quite difficult to come by, and their eight from last season came as quite a surprise, so seeing them hit 10 would be rather impressive.
These predictions are meant to be possible but also highly unlikely, which is why they’re considered bold. It’ll be fun to see how the season unfolds and if any of these predictions are met or how close they get. Hopefully the Wild as a team will reach a new high in wins and have a long postseason as well.
